Shell Eco-marathon 2013

The Shell Eco-marathon challenges high school and college student teams from around the world to design, build and test energy efficient vehicles. With annual events in the Americas, Europe and Asia, the winners are the teams that go the farthest distance using the least amount of energy.

The Shell Eco-marathon Europe competition brings together around 200 teams and 3,000 students from across Europe to battle for ultra-energy efficiency on the road. The event also features the Shell Energy Lab, packed with attractions around innovation and the future of energy.

Shell Eco-marathon comprises two main categories:

  • Urban concept class with vehicles closer to production cars
  • Prototype class with slick, slim streamlined vehicles.

Eight different "fuels" can be used: gasoline, diesel, ethanol, gas to liquid, and fatty acid methyl ester for internal combustion engines. Hydrogen, plug-in battery and solar for others.

Michelin has been a partner since 1985 and will participate in the next edition by providing very low rolling resistance tires. Some Shell Eco-marathon vehicles have taken part in past Challenge Bibendum events, notably Rio in 2010 and Berlin in 2011.
