Resume:
The world is changing fast confronting the road transport industry with challenges and uncertainties. The sector must adapt and reinvent itself.
Our world is changing radically with population growth, urbanization, energy issues, globalization and climate change. The demand and need for mobility, for both people and goods, is accelerating.
In view of these trends it is crucial to find new approaches to mobility to make it less disruptive and more sustainable. The transport sector must use this time of change to its advantage.
In view of the challenges facing the world the transport sector has a responsibility and important contribution to make to meeting global targets. The solutions adopted must be sustainable to protect people (urban congestion, pollution, noise, road accidents and health risks). But also to protect the planet (global warming, climate change, depletion of resources, water and food supply). The global agenda is fraught with conflicting expectations. The Copenhagen Conference on climate change, scheduled for December 2009, has a crucial role to play in finding a post-Kyoto agreement. The objectives must be clear-cut. The participating nations, developed, developing and emerging, must be in agreement on how to share the burden of slowing climate change.
Success will not depend on uniformity. It will depend on each country adopting an appropriate mix of relevant solutions. By accepting the constraints of a changing world and by adopting more sustainable options the industry must reduce its negative impacts and maximize the benefits.
Stakeholders are recognizing the urgency for concerted action to retain a vibrant transport sector with a sustainable future. We are facing numerous challenges that are interlinked. We have an imposing portfolio of convincing solutions. In the words of President Obama to make this happen we must act “boldly, swiftly and together”.
