Road Safety
In 2010, after years of constant increase, 1.3 million people died on the roads and tens of millions were injured.
It is estimated that the economic cost of road accidents represents more than 500 billion dollars annually, or close to 1-3% of GDP with variations from country to country. The human and emotional drama is impossible to quantify.
The worsening of this annual figure is preoccupying, especially in low- and medium-income countries where over 90% of these accidents occur.
Road safety is an important component of public health, quality of life and economic prosperity. By designing safer vehicles and roads as well as promoting a real awareness and a genuine road safety culture, it is possible to significantly reduce the number of road accident victims.
